Guangzhou

Guangzhou (广州), formerly known internationally as Canton, is located in the south of China, in the heart of the economically important Greater Bay Area. This region comprises the metropolises of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao and is one of the most dynamic economic areas in the world with over 80 million inhabitants. The city is located on the lower reaches of the Pearl River (珠江), around 120 kilometres north of Hong Kong, and has been one of Asia's most important trading centres for centuries.

Guangzhou - city of international trade
Guangzhou looks back on over 2,000 years of history. As one of the oldest harbours in China, the city already played a central role in maritime trade during the Tang Dynasty (7th-9th century) and was the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. During the colonial period of the 19th century, Guangzhou was one of the first places in China to be opened up to international trade. Today, the city is the economic heart of southern China - a centre for industry, trade, technology and design.
Guangzhou - China's third largest city
With around 19 million inhabitants, Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and the capital of Guangdong province. The city is considered a pioneer for sustainable urban development, smart city projects and innovation.
Hundreds of international conferences and trade fairs are held here every year - above all the legendary Canton Fair, which has been attracting visitors from all over the world twice a year since 1957. Guangzhou stands for openness, entrepreneurial spirit and a strong sense of quality - a city that elegantly combines the past and the future.
Places of interest
◆ Canton Tower (广州塔) - 604 metres high, one of China's landmarks and a symbol of modern Guangzhou.
◆ Pearl River Cruise - Evening boat trip with spectacular views of the skyline and sea of lights.
◆ Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠) - Masterpiece of traditional architecture with intricate wood and stone decorations.
◆ Shamian Island (沙面岛) - Historic island with colonial villas, cafés and quiet avenues.
◆ Baiyun Mountain (白云山) - „Mountain of White Clouds“, a popular vantage point with panoramic views of the city.
Beijing Road & Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street - lively shopping streets with street food, fashion and market life.
