Suan Long: A sad chapter in Swiss food culture

It was with great sadness that we learned of the recent closure of the Suan Long restaurant chain, an important part of Chinese food culture in Switzerland. This article is based on reports from Blick.ch and 20Min.ch, which detailed the impact of the bankruptcy on the community.

On October 15, 2023, the Zug authorities opened bankruptcy proceedings against Connect Asia Swiss GmbH, the operator of Suan Long, resulting in the closure of several restaurants across the region and the loss of over 70 jobs. The Suan Long restaurants, beloved spots for fans of Asian cuisine in Opfikon, Wetzikon, Uster, Winterthur, and Zug, will no longer be serving their signature dishes.

The company's founder, Ly Leap Roth, cited liquidity issues and outstanding pension fund payments as key factors contributing to the bankruptcy. While he expressed frustration with the legal processes that led to this outcome, he remains determined to fight for the future of his remaining businesses. If a solution cannot be found to save the chain, it will be a great sadness for all the affected staff, as they will not be able to continue within the Suan Long group. We sincerely hope that there is still a future for Suan Long and that the employees impacted by this situation.

At least we are relieved to note that other restaurants owned by Ly Leap Roth, such as the Schlüssel Bar in Uster, the Pizzeria Frohsinn in Fehraltdorf, Asian Fusion in Dübendorf, and Ichiban in Küsnacht, will continue to operate. We are saddened for everyone involved and still hope for a future for the brand and its dedicated staff. The culinary community in Switzerland would lose a very important establishment, which has played a significant role in showcasing Chinese cuisine.
